So you want to teach with VIPKid, but aren't sure if you meet the VIPKid teacher requirements?
While teaching English online with VIPKid isn't for everyone, the good news is that you don't need years of classroom teaching experience to qualify.
If you're ready to find out if you have what it takes to join the thousands of happy VIPKid teachers, then keeping reading.
VIPKid Teacher Requirement #1 - A Bachelor's Degree
VIPKid requires all of their teachers to have a bachelor's degree. This means that if you have never completed your college degree, you won't be able to teach for VIPKid.
The good news is that you don't need a formal teaching degree to be a VIPKid teacher. As long as you have a bachelor's degree in something, you'll be just fine.
On the VIPKid application, you will be asked if you have a college degree. Answer this honestly because VIPKid will ask you to submit paperwork at the end of the hiring process to verify that you do indeed have a college degree.
VIPKid Teacher Requirement #2 - One Year Of Teaching Experience
Although you don't need a degree in teaching, one of the VIPKid teacher requirements is that you have at least one year of teaching experience.
Again, the good news is that this doesn't have to be classroom experience. There are lots of VIPKid teachers who have never stepped foot in a school classroom, yet they make great VIPKid teachers.
Examples of Teaching Experience
For instance, you could have experience teaching children at church, as a volunteer at the library, as a daycare worker, or in any other position where you "taught" kids on some capacity.
My husband had experience teaching children in an after school program, as an ESL helper at his church in college, as a children's ministry volunteer, and as a counselor at a summer camp.
I had experience teaching kids in a classroom. But I've also homeschooled my children, taught Sunday School and worked camp counselor in the past.
Cumulative, Not Consecutive
Your teaching experience doesn't need to be an entire year of daily teaching. It can be cumulative, meaning you can add up all of your teaching experience together.
For example, maybe you taught Sunday School once a month for 6 months. Does that only count as 6 days of teaching experience (once a month x 6 months)? No, that is 6 months of teaching experience.
This VIPKid teacher requirement is simply designed to make sure you know how to work with kids and have some experience teaching them.
Note: Keep in mind that if you say you have less than one year of teaching experience on the VIPKid application, you will be automatically disqualified.
VIPKid Teacher Requirement #3 - Eligible To Work In The USA or Canada
Sorry to all of our Aussie, Brittish, and New Zealander friends, but VIPKid only hires those who are eligible to work in the US or Canada.
And unfortunately, if you have a British or Aussie accent and also happen to be eligible to work in the US or Canada, you may have trouble getting hired with VIPKid unless you can speak with an American English accent.
The reason is because Chinese parents are signing their kids up to learn "American English". So if they book a class with you and hear a thick British accent, then they'll complain to VIPKid.
VIPKid Teacher Requirement #4 - A Computer and High-Speed Internet Access
Streaming video and audio across the internet as you teach a child in China takes a long of bandwidth. So you'll need to make sure your internet if fairly fast.
They recommend a 20Mbps download speed.
VIPKid also recommends that you connect to your router via an ethernet cable to ensure a constant high-speed connection.
